Alternative Advent Calender!

Christmas

I have never been a huge fan of chocolate Advent Calenders because they seem to miss the point. This year at home we have a different one that is all the doing of my wife who also feels the same and wanted to find a way to get our two daughters thinking about advent.

So she created a calender a Christmas tree with twenty for pockets and in each has been added a card and maybe something to go with it.

The cards have things for the girls to do or thinbk about. Todays was to look at news and pray for a situation that felt sad about. They got on the News Round web site and wrote a beautiful prayer. Others are things likethose below:

Make a Christmas decoration for someone else (They did and gave them to some old people where they were singing carols some of the residents were in tears from the gifts).

Choose and send an ethical gift. Two pigs were sent through the Christian Aid site (their choice).

Pray for someone less fortunate than you.

Tell you sister three reasons why you love her.

Another had some money for a charity they bith support.

It has been a huge joy to see the girls respond and engage with this. They love it and it has led to conversations about the whole point of Christmas and a new family tradition has been born.

This is probably not one to do with your youth group unless you meet everyday but you could encourage them to adopt it at home create their own. It would also work really well in a classroom setting.
